OMBIDI SPECIES    A Pilot Study in northern Namibia

OMAFO OMUDIKA  (Manihot esculenta)

Omudika (Oshikwanyama); Omudhika (Oshindonga)

Mature Omudika plant

leaf shape

Note: Cassava is not common in north central Namibia but a few plants may be found on farms further east, e.g. in Kavango and Caprivi regions.

DESCRIPTION

A tree or shrub which can reach a height of 2 meters or more dependent on the soil fertility. The bush has tall stems with few branches. Leaves are characteristic palmate (like a hand) with five to seven lobes. Although the crop does set seeds, it is only propagated from stem cuttings.

USE

The leaves are reported to be used for spinach. Cassava is mainly grown for its production of tubers in most other countries.
There are no records on how the leaves are cooked.

POTENTIAL FOR CULTIVATION

The potential for cultivation is uncertain. Although little is known about growing cassava in the central parts of Namibia, it is assumed that the long dry season may be a hindrance for production. Field testing has begun, however. The few cassava trees that were found in the area all grow inside the homestead where there is higher soil fertility and more water.

SIMILAR SPECIES

There is a cassava-like tree or shrub often grown as an ornamental in town gardens. It is unknown whether this species is utilized.
