Bagrada 2
Namibian crop pests  #  81

unknown Order:  Family:

Sucking symptoms on a leaf

Adult bugs

 Eggs scattered over a leaf

Close-up of a single egg

This species looks like the common bagrada bug. The colours are slightly different, however, and the habit of living in a tree was new to me, so I took a few photos and collected a few specimens. For my own identification, I call it "Bagrada 2" until it has been confirmed that it is also Bagrada or a separate species.

Common names:

No vernacular names were recorded.

Pest status:

The pest status is unknown. A garden tree was severely affected by the bug and symptoms and eggs could be found on all leaves. The symptoms were visible from June 1999 and throughout the year.

Distribution:

The "bagrada2" was only found recently in a garden in Oshakati East. The distribution is unknown.

Description:

The tiny white eggs are laid singly on the leaf surface.
Young nymphs are quite similar to the adult bug.
The adult bug is 6-7 mm long and have a pattern of orange colours on a black background.

Control:

No control is recommended

Other notes:

Only few specimens were pinned and they have not been sent for identification yet.
