 Devil's Thorn looper
Namibian crop pests  #  76

unknown Order: Lepidoptera Family:

Looper on Devil's thorn

Common names:

No local names were recorded

Pest status:

 The pest status is unknown.

Description:

A moth caterpillar, possibly a looper, judged from the peculiar movements of the body.
This species was especially noticed once in a mass outbreak on Devil's Thorn at Ogongo Agricultural College, Omusati region, in the early 90-ies. The caterpillar completely defoliated the Devil's Thorn plants over a large area in the vegetable garden, but did not seem to affect other plants. Unfortunately, no specimens were reared through to maturity so the species was not identified.

The species has been observed at Ogongo College since the outbreak, but only in small numbers.

Control:

Control is not recommended until the pest status is established. It may even be considered a beneficial insect if it can reduce the number of the destructive weed, Devil's Thorn.

Other notes:

The looper should be reared in cages to bring out adult moths in sufficient number for proper identification. Investigations are needed to identify the range of plants that are attacked by the looper. It is especially important to note whether the looper in any way affects the growth of the weed called Devil's Thorn.
