Omboga or Omhongu plant (Cleome gynandra) with circular
miner symptoms
The wild spinach (Cleome gynandra) is called Ombidi, Omhongu or Omboga
in vernacular language. The young plants are picked early in the rainy
season while the pearl millet fields are weeded. The plants are mixed with
other species and boiled to produce a green sauce for the pearl millet
porridge.

Description:

All leaves on the plants (C. gynandra) showed a number of circular
miner spots, approximately 5 mm in diameter. The spots were pale green. |

This species was only observed on Cleome gynandra from one garden
in Oshakati town during 1998. Cleome gynandra is an important traditional
food plant so please report any further incidents of this potential pest.
If you happen to find attacked plants, please try to hatch the pest and
preserve specimens in alcohol for proper identification. |
